Under the Linden 2008 Summary Programme
Wednesday 20 August – Sunday 24 August, 2008
Under the Linden is anchored by its belief in the need to defend and advocate enduring values in art, thought and life, at a time when the accelerating machinery of market-led globalisation and consumerism, alongside an increasing unaccountability and hierarchy of power in governments worldwide threaten numerous forms of community, environment and history. It is not restricted to work or expression in one medium only and, as it develops, will promote themed events, commissions and an ever-broadening dialogue with innovative thinkers in science, philosophy, belief and activism.
internationally known makers / thinkers
Each year up to six internationally known makers / thinkers will be profiled and in conversation / performance. They will be invited to select works in a portable medium that mean something to them and around which dialogue can begin.
Czech culture
A significant strand in celebration of the singular qualities of imaginative Czech culture will also be initiated. Whether honouring film-makers or their body of work, an artist, a writer or a commentator, this will recognise the very particular and fertile landscape of Czech intellectual and creative life, from which
Under the Linden draws special sustenance.
The programme in the first year establishes certain key priorities and mixes feature film, short film, essay and artists’ film with readings, music, an exhibition and special performances.
Film programmes take place in the Kamenice Kino, a 305 seat single screen cinema on the market square.
The programme is timed and designed so that it might be seen in its entirety by the festival audience. There will also be a special evening outdoor screening in the castle courtyard.
All films are subtitled into English.
